Moritz SallaTheremin

Theremin is an experimental instrument that uses light as an interface to output tones and melodies. It can be played by a single player or as a dialogue between two.

Theremin uses electrical components and excludes any external interfaces or software. Its piezo speakers produce raw (admittedly annoying) sound waves. I see great potential in enhancing the experience through interactive machine learning. Through IML, mappings feel nuanced and tangible than by hard-coding.

Initially, my research explored how to turn a surface into a light sensor. This would require the user to cast shadows on a predetermined area, creating the illusion that the hovering hand is, in fact, being sensed.
